Facts and figures regarding Argentine dance, music, and poetry

Tango Argentino is an improvisational dance that is free and very personal. The traditional tango, on the other hand, follows a set of steps. It is based on the European or international competition dance program's rules.

On the other hand, the Argentine tango is a people's dance. Competitions, such as those held in traditional dances, are crucial. They are the exception rather than the rule, as they do not truly represent the spirit of Tango Argentino.

The Tango Argentino, however, is much more than a dance. It's also a separate musical genre for which Argentina is known worldwide. Tango poetry is distinct in that it is frequently hard and grammatically interesting. Many of the lyrics are written in "Lunfardo," the vernacular of Buenos Aires' former crooks. Many words from the Italian language have been incorporated into this still-in-use slang.

Heart to heart

The "Tango Argentino" dance is focused on leading and following body gestures. Instead of using the arms, the chest is used to guide you. It's known in Argentina as "from the heart to heart" (de corazón a corazón). There are no choreographies or step combinations that you must follow. The tango becomes infinitely diverse and fascinating as a result of this.

Of course, the stage tango (Tango éscenario) is another option. This is primarily used to amuse the audience. Spectacular acrobatic figures influenced by classical ballet or modern dance are frequently included. Rehearsed choreographies are required here, even if merely to allow a group of dancers to dance in unison.

When it comes to Tango Argentino, what hobby or professional dancers celebrate on the dance floors of public milongas (dance gatherings) is usually pure improvisation.

You dance differently with each partner, each mood, and each piece of music. The steps are graceful, and the upper body is frequently wrapped around each other in a tight hug. Except specific figures, the lower body and legs do not contact. The foundation of Argentine Tango is embracing and walking in unison as a couple. The dancers do a wide range of moves, yet constantly return to plain walking in between.
